INTRODUCTION

Emergency Department is the frontline and a critical service in a hospital. It is a specialty domain that offers clinical care to wide range of acute medical infirmities, illness or injury. This involves the provision of emergency critical medical care that includes diagnostic, resuscitation and stabilization components and life saving interventions.

The general scope of emergency department includes pre-hospital and hospital-based medical care. It advocates patient focus care which is holistic and total in nature which inculcates a corporate nature value of caring, teamwork and professionalism

DEPARTMENT’S OBJECTIVE

  • To provide a prompt, accurate and definitive emergency medicine and trauma care service.
  • To provide an integrate and comprehensive care which is seamless and continuous from pre hospital care setting through to hospital service.
  • To provide total quality management in all the critical management inters phases from pre hospital care to triage service and sorting out to the various dedicated management zone namely; critical(red) zone, semi critical (yellow) zone and non critical (green) zone.
  • To provide an efficient and effective resuscitation and stabilization together with an accurate diagnostic service and critical life saving interventions.
  • The management of the critical patient shall be conducted by an efficient team of skillful personnel which include specialists, medical officers, assistant medical officers, staff nurses and healthcare personnel.

SCOPE OF SERVICES

  • The EMTS provides pre-hospital services that includes;
      - Ambulance service: first responder, emergency response and Inter-facility transportation.
      - Medical Emergency Coordinating Centre (MECC) and 999 Emergency Call Management system.
      - Major medical incident and disaster management.
      - Mass gathering and major event medical coverage.
  • The EMTS also provides hospital-based services that includes;
      - Triage services
      - Emergency Clinical Care
      - Observation medicine
  • In designated department, the EMTS shall also offer sub-specialty emergency medicine and trauma services.
  • Other ancillary services offered;
      - Medical emergency and Code Blue TeamEmergency medicine and trauma limited follow up clinic
      - After office hour’s outpatient services
      - Point of care testing
